Turning the sod and a new leaf in Irish paediatric healthcare
After six years of fundraising, work officially began today on the building of Ireland's first children's hospice LauraLynn House on the grounds of Children's Sunshine Home on the Leopardstown Road.
Once completed, in early 2011, LauraLynn House will be the only healthcare unit in the country to offer unique community-based paediatric palliative and respite care in a unit designed and built specifically for this purpose with their children and their families in mind.
It will be the realization of the shared vision of both the LauraLynn Children's Hospice Foundation and The Children's Sunshine Home that is pioneering excellence in Paediatric Palliative Care to deliver quality of life for every child. The building project will be funded by fundraising, which is ongoing to ensure the viability of unit.
The Children's Sunshine Home cares for children with life limiting conditions and their families by providing respite, transitional, home support, crisis care and where required end of life care to children who suffer from complications at birth, meningitis, tumours and other highly medical dependent conditions. [i]
Through benchmarking and learnings from other countries, and linking in with other relevant Irish organisations, The Children's Sunshine Home hopes to encourage the replication of the formula for community-based paediatric palliative care across the country, to ensure children and families with high medical needs can be reached and catered for.
Commenting on the historic launch The Children's Sunshine Home CEO Philomena Dunne said: "The family is central to the care of every child and the care provided by the Children's Sunshine Home is developed in consultation with parents, and all appropriate available community support. We believe that the child and family should be supported in their own home, but where this isn't possible, families should have a choice, and appropriate care, especially end of life care, should be accessible to anyone who needs it."
Founder of the LauraLynn hospice Foundation, Jane McKenna adds: "Access to appropriate end of life care should be available to every family. Nothing can ease the pain of losing a child, but the right care can at least give quality to the child's life, however short. 'Putting life into a child's day, not days into a child's life'. This is a proud moment for my husband Brendan and I. It's what we have been working toward since 2003, and it's what we know our girls, Laura and Lynn would have wished and be truly happy about."
